Botox™
Botox has a long history medical use to block muscle contraction It was more recently FDA approved for cosmetic correction of creases and lines formed by years of squinting or frowning such as forehead creases, frown lines, ’ crows
feet’ around eyes. A simple injection softens lines for 3-6 months and can be repeated as often as needed to maintain the effect. Slight bruising or temporary headache may occur following injection. Injectable botulinum toxin has an excellent safety record. Botox can also be used for control of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpits, palms or soles. Twice yearly injections are generally required to maintain dryness.

Fillers
A variety of injectable fillers are available to correct facial creases and deeper wrinkles. The advantages of injectable fillers are convenience and minimal ‘down time’.

Restylane™ and Perlane™
Restylane™ is safe dermal filler that is used to soften deep creases or folds on the lower face and add fullness to lips. It can also be used to correct depressed scars due to trauma or acne. Results last an average of 6-9 months although some patients maintain their correction for longer. Injection of Restylane is a simple office procedure with little or no ‘down time’. It is FDA approved since 2004 and is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our skin and joints. Restylane is synthetically produced and contains no animal by products. It has an excellent safety record with a very low incidence of skin reactions. Perlane™ is a form of hyaluronic acid that is used for deeper facial creases with longer lasting affect. Perlane™ will be available in the US beginning 6/07.

Sculptra™
Sculptra is an injectable product used to correct the loss of facial fat and restore fullness to the face. The cheeks and the temples are the areas most often treated. Typically multiple treatment sessions are required to produce a natural
appearing gradual increase in skin thickness and fullness. The effect lasts for up to 2 years after completion of treatment. Sculptra is made of a synthetic product like that found in dissolving stitches and is biodegradable. It has been FDA approved since 2004.

Radiesse™
Radiesse is injectable filler used for the correction of deep facial creases such as the nasolabial folds and depressed scars. Correction lasts for an average of 12 months after injection. It is made of naturally occurring calcium micro spheres that stimulate local collagen formation and are biodegradable. Radiesse was FDA approved for the correction of severe facial wrinkling and facial fat loss December 2006.
